Mummy Musings: How to breast raise awareness

"It’s that time of year again…support of Breast Cancer Awareness!! So we all remember last year’s game of writing your bra color as your status? Or the way we like to have our handbag handy? Last year, so many people took part that it made national news and the constant updating of status reminded everyone why we’re doing this and helped raise …awareness!! Do NOT tell any males what the statuses mean…keep them guessing!! And please copy and paste (in a message) this to all your female friends! It’s time to confuse the men again (not that it’s really that hard to do ;]) "

Have you ever gotten this stupid message, or one of it's stupid deviations? It used to be during breast cancer awareness month, but now it's all the time. Oh this sounds like fun, let's gang up on men to support breastcancer awareness. Sure it makes people think, but more likely about what the hell type of disease has made these women go all crypic!

I am against these things. It's a good idea. However, it's NOT doing what it's set out to be doing. I was okay with only getting this stupid chain-thing once a year but now it's popping up everytime someone think of some question that will have a psuedo-sexual answer:
  • Post your bra color as your status.
  • Post where you leave your purse/bag:  "I like it on _____"
  • Post your shoe size in inches, followed by a sad face.
  • The fake pregnancy game; put how many weeks pregnant you are. (Oh haha, how fun. Don't forget to add fake cravings to make it seem more real and hurt more people in your contacts!)
  • Fake moving thing based on your birthday: "I am going to Miami for 30 months".

There are so many reasons I am against this stupid online campaign. I could rant and rave about how excluding men is nonsensical as Breast Cancer isn't exclusive to women, I could question how you can raise awareness without even letting people know the issue you're supposedly raising awareness for. Hell, I could even get angry about the playground bullying nature of this "tradition".

Instead, this is where I try and make a difference. No more stupid games. Support real breast cancer awareness. Like these pages on facebook so your friends can read up.

Don't be afraid to talk about breast cancer. Check yourself regularly, hell even involve your partner in it so it doesn't have to be awkward, stressful and clinical. Talk to your girlfriends about it. If you're of the right age, get mammograms. And if you have any worries, see your GP straight away. If you're given the ok and still feel "not right", be sure to press for it. Many cases can be overlooked by jaded doctors.

"So what can I do?"
  • Be aware of the changes in your breasts throughout the month. (Guys this goes to you too)
  • Go here to learn how to check yourself properly.
  • If you notice any abnormalities (to you) in your breast, see your GP.
  • Give money to charities; you can often find them at tills in shops.
  • If you don't have money to spare, donate clothes to Cancer Support charities.
  • Spread the word on twitter, your blog.
  • Stop treating breast cancer as a female-only condition.
  • Buy a pink ribbon.
  • Volunteer with breast cancer care.
  • Click the button below (daily) to help someone get a free mammogram.
